Paul Stacy (born 1983 Manasquan, NJ) is an American professional ice hockey defenseman who plays for the Arizona Coyotes of the National Hockey Leauge (NHL). (TTS Version) Stacy is the first defenseman to lead he DEL in scoring and goals scored. He wears the number 76. His play led Hamburg to its first DEL Championship in 2013.
Stacy has had a late break into hockey success. Stacy made a name for himself playing hockey on an NCAA level for the Maryland Terrapins. Stacy developed a very unique game style wit Maryland, known for his speed and Bobby Orr like ability to rush the puck. Stacy was the MVP of the Terrapins team in the 05 and 06 season (TTS Version). He led the team and the EA Custom League in Scoring recording 15 goals in the 06 National Tournament. Stacy expected to be taken high in the 1st round in the 06 NHL Entry Draft, but was passed over because of a reputation for heavy partying. He was eventually drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning.
TROUBLE AND LOST TIME
Stacy dislocated his should in a September pre-season game against the Florida Panthers. Stacy had a very good training camp with Tampa Bay before this and was expected to make the club. This injury kept him out for the entire 06-07 season because of setbacks during rehabilitation from the injury. In the spring of 07 on March 18th, Stacy was pulled over and arrested in Florida for having more than a pound of marijuana. Stacy later plead no-contest to the charge and received 2 years of probation. Stacy in the aftermath refused to apologize for the arrest instead speaking out consistently of the absurdity of the law making marijuana use a crime. Stacy’s rights were traded to The Calgary Flames in the summer of 2007 as Stacy was considered to be an embarrassment to the Lightning and was ridiculed by major media news outlets. In September of 2007 Stacy failed a drug test for marijuana and was suspended and then released by the Flames. He played in 3 games in the preseason recording 4 goals. Flames fans were very disappointed as it seemed Stacy would make a huge impact for the team.
2 YEARS IN THE ASIAN LEAGUE
Stacy went on to sit out the entire 07-08 and 08-09 season traveling around the world. At this point many including Stacy himself thought that he may never play any kind of pro hockey again. However on a 2009 trip to Japan, Stacy found himself with a tryout with the Nippon Paper Cranes. The Cranes were very happy with the tryout and signed him for a 1 year contact. Stacy went on to win the award for Best Offensive Defenceman, and helped the Cranes to a winnng record. They resigned him for the year 2010-11 and although he did not repeat his prior success he did have an overall good season. The Cranes again had a winning record.
FRENCH LIGUE MAGNUS
Stacy signed with Rouen in the Magnus (French League) for the 11-12 season. Expected to be a bench type player, Stacy played himself into a starting role and exploded for 3 hat tricks in the playoffs helping Rouen win its 4th Magnus Championship in a row. This playoff performance earned him the notice of the EA Sports World and Totallyserioussports.com created him for the EA Sports NHL 2012-13 season signing with the Hamburg Freezers. Stacy signed with the Freezers as he had a preference for the German city and its known red light district.
Stacy came to sign with the Hamburg Freezers of the DEL German ice hockey league to be an on ice mentor for rookie Mikhail Kupchik who was coming as an 18 year old rookie from the Ukraine. Kupchik is the cousin of EA Sports NHL Legend Ted Kupchik. Stacy was expected to help lead the team and had a major break out season that has made the NHL, KHL, and hockey world take notice. Stacy recorded 60 goals and won the scoring title of the DEL league. His 60 goals scored is a record for a defenseman in the DEL. He recorded a plus/minus of +53. Also a record.
12- 13 SEASON WITH HAMBURG
In the regular season the Freezers finished with a record of 39 wins for a league high 112 points. Hamburg earned the #1 seed for the playoffs. The Freezers under the lead of Stacy and Kupchik led the league in goals scored with 205. They also set a DEL record for the powerplay scoring at a 50% clip. Stacy’s best game came in a record 16-0 win against the Sraubing Ice Tigers where he scored 5 goals. Stacy also helped the Freezers win 11 games in a row, with many of the wins coming with Kupchik on the injured list. Stacy finished number 1 in the league with power play goals with 12 and game winning goals with 9. Stacy was named MVP of the DEL 2013 Season when year end awards were given out.
2013 DEL PLAYOFFS
Stacy picked up right where he led off in the regular season. He had 3 game winning goals in the playoffs including 2 against Hannover. He also would record a +7 in the Freezers march through the playoffs. Stacy played in 14 games and ended up scoring 15 goals as he was named MVP of the DEL Playoffs. His play led the Freezers to their 1st DEL Cup Championship.
SIGNING WITH HIFK
In September of 2013 Stacy signed with HIFK of the SM-LIIGA for the 2013-14 season.
PERSONAL LIFE AND FUTURE
Stacy resides on the Jersey Shore in the off season. He has in the past been linked to a cheerleader from HIFK, an ice hockey team that plays in SM-LIIGA. Rumors have also pointed to him dating Taylor Swift for a short period of time in 2008 though this is unconfirmed. During Stacy’s stay with the Freezers, there were many unconfirmed fan reports of Stacy spending quite a bit of time with some of the underworld characters of Hamburg’s Red Light District. Stacy when asked has requested his privacy and refused to answer questions. Fans have speculated what kind of an effect he may have on some of Hamburg’s younger players, including Mikhail Kupchik. Stacy’s influence has not shown any kind of negative impact on the ice however. As of fall of 2013 Stacy was considered for the US Olympic team due to his outstanding play over the last year.
In September 2015 Paul Stacy, signed a 1 year 1.44 milion dollar contract to play for the Arizona Coyotes.
