HIFK Team Report- September 2013
So far so good for The HIFK. So far so good for SM-Liiga newcomer Paul Stacy. One thinks that as one goes the other will follow this season. As we begin October HIFK is 2nd in the League with 15 points, only 1 less than leader Kalpa. HIFK does have one game in hand however, and they have been completely dominant. With the exception of a lackluster loss to Lukko, HIFK has looked like they are the most powerful team in the league.
The Defensive Combo of Paul Stacy and Toni Soderholm have been as good as it gets. The tandem is a combine +21. Soderholm has done an excellent job of providing the D along with the occasional sneaky offense, while his co-blue liner has supplied the O. Stacy is leading the league with 6 goals and 10 points. He also has a power play goal. It is very different watching HIFK combine an explosive rush offense along with solid neutral zone play. If this continues it could be tough for the others in SM-LIIGA this year.
Joakim Eriksson has been able to step up his offense with the arrival of Stacy as he is 2nd on the team with 5 goals and 9 points. The rest of the team has been very solid with overwhelming stats in the plus category.
We might be nitpicking just a bit but goalie Joni Ortio has been solid but not spectacular. He is 4-1 with a GAA of about 2.44. This is good, but we are used to a more defensive game in years past from HIFK and that might be part of the problem. With Paul Stacy providing your firepower it is going to leave defensive lapses as we saw last year when he was with Hamburg. As long as the Fireworks keep coming it should not matter too much.
Speaking of Stacy he has racked up 15 penalty minutes so far this year. Enough for the team lead. This was due to a game misconduct he suffered against Porin. He defeated Michael Ryan in a dust up, but it did get him thrown out of the game. Also, two-way defenseman Kyle Klubertanz suffered a knee injury in the same game and missed 3 games. He has been able to make his way back into the line up at this point.
So they lost once, but they have looked really good in victory. The signing of Stacy has made a huge difference in the make up of this team. We would give them an A+ but they technically are not in 1st so we can’t do that just yet. But make no mistake, this team is a powerhouse.
