HIFK and Paul Stacy Win Home and Road Openers

HIFK Defeats Espo Blues 4-3

Played in Helsinki

Paul Stacy has brought his explosive offensive game to Helsinki and fans are definitely taking notice.  5 points in 2 games.  For a defenseman in SM-LIIGA that is not too shabby.  He also has definitely helped open up the offensive capabilities of HIFK.  Joakim Eriksson recorded 3 points in game 1 in  victory and 4 points in the game 2 triumph over Jokerit.  Both Espo and Jokerit were a bit dumbfounded on how to defend HIFK now that they have this new offensive weapon.  Last years DEL MVP did not seem to miss a beat and seems like he fits right in with his new team.

HIFK Goalie Joni Ortio was up and down in the first 2 contests.  He had an amazing save against Espo in the first game where he dove across the crease and stopped a shot point blank to hold down the 4-3 win, but also allowed a couple of soft goals.  We will have to see if the offensive minded D play will have an effect on HIFK goaltending the way it did with Stacy’s last team.  We shall see.

HIFK Defeats Jokerit 4-2

Played in Helsinki

The rivalry continued here with the continuing battle for the city of Helsinki being won this time by HIFK.  Jokerit played tough early, but fell apart in the 3rd period allowing 3 goals.  They were out hit quite a bit in this game and by the 3rd period it took its toll.

The game also featured a good scrap between Jokerit’s Toni Maki, and HIFK’s Siim Liivik.  Maki won the fight and took Liivik down, but he did receive a nice gash over his nose in the process.

No doubt the intensity between these 2 elite Finn teams will only grow as the season progresses.
